Waterfalls & Waterholes
Waterfalls in the Top End
Picture a stunning oasis – unruly red cliffs, lush pandanus coves, the inviting sparkle of crystal-clear water and the peaceful hum of a running waterfall. This is how you can experience swimming in the waterholes of the Top End. There’s no such thing as a real winter in the NT; with day temperatures rarely dropping below 25°C, freshwater swims are the perfect way to relax and unwind almost year-round.
In all regions of the Top End, there is a treasure trove of waterfalls, billabongs and waterways awaiting to be explored. Litchfield National Park boasts accessible plunge pools, tumbling waterfalls and shady pools hidden between lush, green vegetation. Within the 20,000 square kilometres of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park, find picture-perfect waterholes and waterfalls tucked away in between natural sandstone gorges and paperbark and pandanus-fringed pools. Swim between the sheer cliffs of Nitmiluk gorge itself to sandy freshwater beaches or explore the Katherine region with its unique network of thermal pools and hot springs.
In the Top End, water places have sustained Aboriginal people and their livelihoods for tens of thousands of years. Whilst these swim spots are amazing to relax in and enjoy, they remain very important places culturally, spiritually and environmentally. Traditional Aboriginal owners are sharing these swimming places with us, so whilst lapping up the serenity, please respect the waters and their surrounding ecosystem.
